HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 24, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Opening in the top spot domestically for the weekend, “Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween” outperformed industry expectations and took home an estimated $27.6 million. Box office Mojo is calling this the largest opening for a Madea-branded feature and for a Tyler Perry-directed film overall since 2009’s “Madea Goes to Jail.”
Premiering in second place is “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” starring Tom Cruise. The sequel to 2012’s “Jack Reacher” took home an estimated $23 million in the U.S. The film also brought home an additional $31 million overseas. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” has an estimated worldwide total of $54 million.
The new horror film, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” opened in third place with an estimated domestic tally of $14 million. The film also earned $7.9 million from foreign markets, bringing its global total to $21.9 million.
Dropping from first place to fourth place is “The Accountant,” starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick. The crime thriller did an estimated $14 million this weekend. “The Accountant” has brought home a grand total of $58.1 million worldwide.
The fifth highest earning film for the weekend is “The Girl on the Train,” starring Emily Blunt. The mystery thriller sold an estimated $7.2 million in tickets its third weekend in release. “The Girl on the Train” has a global total of $104 million.
The other new release, “Keeping Up with the Joneses,” debuted well out of the Top 5 (in the seventh place slot) with $5.6 million. The film stars Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot.
