HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Weekend predictions were correct as “Suicide Squad” and “Sausage Party” remained in the top slots.
“Suicide Squad,” now in its third week in release, took in an estimated $20.7 million over the weekend. The film, which stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, has earned $262.2 million since opening Aug. 5. The D.C. comic-turned-film has a worldwide total of $572.6 million.
Holding firm in second place is the animated comedy “Sausage Party,” which brought in an estimated $15.3 million over the weekend. The film, starring the vocal talents of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig and Paul Rudd, has an estimated domestic total of $65.3 million and a global take of $71.3 million.
Opening in third place was the Jonah Hill/Miles Teller comedy “War Dogs” with a weekend tally of $14.3 million. The film was met with lukewarm reviews from the critics and scored just 59 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Internationally, “War Dogs” earned just $6.5 million, making its total worldwide take $20.8 million.
In fourth place is the animated “Kubo and the Two Strings,” which brought in an estimated $12.6 million its debut weekend. The film underperformed slightly as weekend predictions were focused on the film’s 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97 percent Audience Score.
And opening in fifth place was “Ben-Hur,” starring Jack Huston and Morgan Freeman. The film received a 28 percent score from Rotten Tomatoes and barely eked past “Pete’s Dragon” for the fifth slot.
