HOLLYWOOD, Sept 26, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — As predicted, “The Magnificent Seven” rode off into the No.1 spot as the top earner this weekend.
The remake of the 1960 film (which was a remake of Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai”) brought home an estimated $35 million domestically. The film, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, did an additional $24.8 million overseas, bringing the film’s total to $59.8 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Opening in second place, the animated “Storks” took home an estimated $21.8 million in the U.S. The film, which stars the voice talents of Andy Samberg, Jennifer Aniston and Kelsey Grammer, took in an estimated $18.3 million in foreign sales, bringing “Stork’s” worldwide total to $40.1 million.
Dropping into third from first place is “Sully,” the film focusing on the story of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who landed his disabled plane in the Hudson River, saving all passengers and crew. The film, which opened Sept. 9, earned an estimated $13.9 million over the weekend. “Sully,” which stars Tom Hanks, has earned $126.8 million globally.
“Bridget Jones’s Baby” drops a notch to fourth place, taking in an estimated weekend tally of $4.5 million its second weekend in release. The comedy, starring Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth, has a lackluster U.S. total of $16.4 million. But the film is doing much better overseas, taking in $67.1 million in overseas markets.
“Snowden” lands in fifth place with an estimated weekend total of $4.1 million. The film, which is in limited release, has a two-week total of $15.1 million.
