Weekend Box Office: ‘TMNT: Out of the Shadows’ Tops Box Office Sales

HOLLYWOOD, June 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — As predicted, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” topped box office sales for the weekend.

The second installment in the newly rebooted “TMNT” franchise opened in more than 4,000 U.S. theaters with an estimated take of $35.2 million, according to Box Office Mojo.com.

The film, which stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Stephan Amell, still under-performed and didn’t come close to the $65.5 million the original did when it opened on Aug. 8, 2014.

Dropping to second place is “X-Men: Apocalypse,” now in its second week of release. The superhero film took in an estimated $22.3 million over the weekend.

The film, starring James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, earned an estimated domestic total of $116.4 million and a global total of $402.5 million.

Debuting in third place is the weepy romantic film “Me Before You,” starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. The film took in an estimated $18.2 million and has a worldwide take of $25.9 million.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” drops to fourth place its second week in release, bringing home an estimated $10.6 million. The family fantasy film, starring Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and Anne Hathaway, has a domestic take of $50.7 million with a global total of $176.2 million.

“The Angry Birds Movie” rounds out the Top 5 highest-grossing films for the weekend with a total of $9.7 million its third weekend out. The video game turned movie has a U.S. total of $86.6 million and a worldwide box office of $283.4 million.
