HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Disney Animation scored big with “Zootopia” this weekend.
The animated film, about a rookie bunny cop teaming up with a sly fox to solve a series of crimes, became the studio’s largest three-day opening ever.
The film, which scored 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, took in an estimated $74.1 million its first three days.
Debuting in second place was “London Has Fallen,” starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhardt and Morgan Freeman. The political thriller and sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen,” opened with $21.7 million in first weekend ticket sales.
Dropping from first place to third place is “Deadpool,” which spent three weeks at the top. The R-rated superhero movie earned $16.4 million over the weekend. “Deadpool” has a domestic total of $311.1 million and worldwide take of $673.2 million.
Opening in fourth place was “Whisky Tango Foxtrot,” a dramatic comedy starring Tina Fey, Billy Bob Thornton, Margot Robbie and Martin Freeman. The film premiered with $7.6 million.
In fifth place is “Gods of Egypt,” starring Gerard Butler. The film took in $5 million over the weekend and has earned $22.8 million since opening two weeks ago.
