LOS ANGELES, April 29 (UPI) — “The Wheel of Time” is the latest fantasy series headed for TV.
“Wheel of Time” author Robert Jordan‘s widow, Harriet McDougal, announced the news on the late writer’s Google+ page Thursday. Jordan died of cardiac amyloidosis at age 58 in 2007.
“Wanted to share with you exciting news about ‘The Wheel of Time,'” McDougal wrote. Legal issues have been resolved. ‘The Wheel of Time’ will become a cutting edge TV series!”
“I couldn’t be more pleased,” the 76-year-old poet and “Wheel of Time” editor added. “Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio.”
The first “Wheel of Time” book, “The Eye of the World,” was published in 1990, and followed by 13 sequels between 1990 and 2013. Author Brandon Sanderson completed the series after Jordan’s death, choosing to split the 12th book into three novels.
FXX aired a pilot, Winter Dragon, based on “The Wheel of Time” last spring that was unsanctioned by Jordan’s estate. McDougal said at the time it “was made without [her] knowledge or cooperation,” calling herself “dumbfounded by [the] occurrence.”
“The Wheel of Time” adaptation follows the success of HBO series “Game of Thrones” and Starz series “Outlander.” The former is based on George R.R. Martin‘s series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” while “Outlander” is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s books of the same name.
