Makers Of Moldy Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups Pledge Design Change

Moldy Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups

MONTREAL, Feb. 26 (UPI) — Tommee Tippee sippy cups announced it will change the way the cups are made in response to viral social media posts about mold growing in the lids.

Montreal resident Marie-Pier S. L’HostieĀ posted photos to Facebook showing what appeared to be mold festering inside an orange Tommee Tippee cup used by the son of her friend, Simon O’kanada.

L’Hostie said O’kanada’s son had been ill for an extended period and the father decided to break the cup’s anti-leak spout open while investigating the cause of the sickness.

The photos show the anti-leak stopper apparently filled with mold.

“Those of you with these cups pay special attention, he has washed it with his hands and in the dishwasher, etc., and the mildew has stayed anyway! Share it!” another friend of O’kanada’s, Penny Powell, posted on Facebook.

L’Hostie’s post was shared thousands of times and led to numerous posts from other parents who made similar discoveries.

Tommee Tippee UK initially blamed the mold on liquids not on the company’s “recommended” list for use with the cup.

“The results support that when used with recommended liquids (cold, light fluids including water and non-pulp juices) and cleaned in line with instructions, there are no problems. Difficulties have arisen though when liquids that are not recommended for use in the cups have been used, like thick formula milk, pulpy juice and warm liquids. We also recommend that cups are not left for long periods before being cleaned,” the company said in a statement to Tribune Broadcasting.

A post on the Tommee Tippee North America Facebook page Thursday revealed the company plans to alter the design of the cups.

“We sell millions of Sippee cups globally, but we know from recent social media posts that some people have had problems cleaning the valve. For this we sincerely apologize, and we are actively following up on any concerns raised,” the post read.

“We want everyone to be happy with our products, and we always want to exceed expectations. We’ve therefore listened to our customers and will be launching a new Sippee cup in the next few months. The new cup will have a two-piece valve that can be used with different types of liquid and is easier to clean.

In the meantime, we are making the transparent, see-through valves shown here immediately available to parents that have concerns. The see-through valve will enable parents to see inside and give you confidence that the valve is clean.”
