Oct. 23 (UPI) — The Meijer retail store chain announced Saturday a recall of packaged vegetables in six states due to a potential listeria contamination, which can cause fatal infections in pregnant women, newborns, and people over the age of 65.
The company released a list of vegetable products affected by the recall, which includes cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus and several other packaged vegetable products purchased Sep. 27 through Oct. 20 at Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
In a press release, Meijer said the potential contamination came from Mann Packing, a Meijer supplier based in Salinas, Calif. and was identified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
“No illnesses have been reported to date,” the company said. “Customers should stop using the product and either dispose of it or return it to the customer service desk at any Meijer store for a full refund.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,600 people each year get contaminated with Listeria, causing 260 deaths.
Saturday’s recall was at least Meijer’s second this year. In February, the company recalled two of its cheese products for a Listeria contamination.
