Thin, Stretchable Device Makes For Easier Heart Monitoring

SEOUL, Jan. 4 (UPI) — Despite the large number of people monitoring their heart and other bodily functions using watches and wristbands, many can take inconsistent measures or be overall unreliable.

Scientists at Seoul National University may have stepped up the monitor game by designing a wearable, sticker-like heart monitor that gets closer to the skin and can stretch and move with the skin, getting continuous measurements, according to a new study.

“The technology in this work provides a new wearable platform for the flash memory and signal amplification devices that are important for continuous monitoring and data storage of a patient’s healthcare information,” said Dae-Hyeong Kim, a researchers at Seoul National University, in a press release.

The researchers designed an ultra-thin circuit using a stretchable silicon membrane and gold nanoparticles, which are more stable and have better long-term memory storage.

In tests, researchers were able to obtain data from the device after test participants completed exercise stress tests.

The study on design and testing of the device is published in the journal Science Advances.
