WEST JORDAN, Utah, June 2, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man lost his life Friday night when the vehicle he was in crashed into a semi-trailer at 6200 S. Bangerter Highway.
The fatal accident happened at about 11:45 p.m., Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen said.
“A big tractor pulling a backhoe on a big trailer” was northbound on Bangerter, Hansen told Gephardt Daily.
“Witnesses say a Honda, also northbound, apparently didn’t see or didn’t notice the truck, and at very high speed it hit the back of the trailer, causing the Honda to go up underneath the trailer.”
At least two of the Honda’s three occupants were young men — probably in their early 20s — one of whom died at the scene, Hansen said. The deceased man was not identified.
Hansen said the other two men had to be extricated from the vehicle and were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The extrication took longer than usual because of the car’s position under the trailer. The Honda was crushed, and Hansen said the front passenger “was very pinned — he couldn’t move.”
The driver of the semi wasn’t injured.
The accident reconstruction team was called out, and Hansen said northbound Bangerter Highway would be blocked until 4 or 5 a.m.
Officials will be checking for any impairment that may have contributed to the crash.
