RICH COUNTY, Utah, June 29, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — One person died at the scene and a second was injured Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover near Garden City.

The accident happened at about 1 p.m. on U.S. 89, near the west side of Garden City, which is next to Bear Lake.

According to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol, a silver Dodge truck, pulling a loaded dump trailer, was northbound on U.S. 89 toward Garden City. It appears the vehicle may have had a mechanical problem causing the trailer to sway or whip. Troopers are investigating the cause.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, exited left and overturned, the release states. The driver was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected. He was flown from the scene to University of Utah Hospital and is in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger, Wilford Diedrich, 80, from Holladay, was seat belted and died on scene. Highway 89 in this area is a grade coming from the summit of Logan Canyon, and remained open during the investigation.
