11-year-old Nephi girl fatally injured during parade

NEPHI, Utah, July 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — An 11-year-old girl died Friday after being run over during a parade in Nephi.

According to information from the Nephi Police Department, the child was sitting in the back of a pickup truck that was part of a parade on Main Street, held in conjunction with the Ute Stampede Rodeo. The pickup truck was pulling a flatbed trailer carrying a demolition derby vehicle.

The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. near 240 S. Main when the girl tried to jump off the southbound pickup truck, and slipped, falling to the road. The pickup driver, who was not aware the child had fallen, continued to drive at a slow rate of speed as the trailer ran over the child.

“Officers and numerous citizens immediately came to the aid of the victim,” Police Chief Michael Morgan said in a news statement.

The girl was transported to the Central Valley Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. The victim’s name has not been released.

“Nephi City and Juab County offers the family and all those involved in this tragic accident our deepest sympathy and prayers,” Morgan’s statement said.
