12-year-old boy dead, 5 injured after minivan rollover on Interstate 15

MILLARD COUNTY, Utah, July 29, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 12-year-old boy is dead and five other people are injured after a minivan rolled on Interstate 15 southbound near Fillmore Saturday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Alex Speer of Escondido, California, acccording to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

The news release said a minivan carrying seven passengers was traveling south on I-15 near milepost 160 at approximately 6:55 p.m.

“The driver, who was driving on a learner’s permit with her father in the passenger seat, allowed the vehicle to drift off the left side of the roadway to a point near the edge of the rumble strips,” the news release said.

“The driver steered sharply to the right, causing the car to begin sliding to its side. The minivan crossed both travel lanes and left the roadway to the right. The vehicle rolled several times, crossed the right-of-way fence and the frontage road, coming to rest on the right side of the frontage road.”

Speer and a 14-year-old boy were fully ejected from the car. Speer was fatally injured, the news release said. A 48-year-old male and the teenage driver were flown by helicopter to Utah Valley Hospital.

The remaining passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Fillmore Community Hospital, with the exception of a 9-year-old male who appeared to not be injured.
