LAYTON, Utah, May 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 14-year-old boy is in extremely critical condition after a three-car crash on Interstate 15 northbound in Layton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at mile marker 332 just after 3:05 a.m., the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The 18-year-old driver of a red Acura passenger car fell asleep and drifted off the road to the right, the news release said. The vehicle impacted a crash attenuator, or railing, bounced back into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Ford Flex.

A 14-year-old male passenger from the Acura was ejected. A gray Nissan Z then struck the boy and the Acura.

The boy was taken to Davis Hospital where he was then flown to the University of Utah Hospital. He was later transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital in extremely critical condition.

The 18-year-old driver of the Acura was transported to an Ogden area hospital with leg and head injuries. Both occupants of the Acura were not wearing seatbelts, officials said.

The driver and the passenger of the Ford Flex were also transported to Davis Hospital with injuries, and later to University of Utah Hospital. Both were wearing seatbelts.

The driver of Nissan Z was wearing his seatbelt and received minor injuries, but did not need medical attention.

“The driver of the Acura had worked a 12-hour day, went to visit family in the Salt Lake area, and was driving home when the crash occurred,” the news release said.

The 14-year-old male was a cousin to the driver and from the Fillmore area.
