19-year-old faces attempted homicide charge in Cedar City motel shooting

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Aug. 4, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating a shooting at a Motel 6 early Wednesday morning.

“At approximately 12:44 a.m., the Cedar City Police Department was dispatched to the Motel 6 located at 1620 W. 200 North, regarding a shooting,” according to a news release from the CCPD.

“Initial information was given that a male had been shot and the suspect’s whereabouts were unknown,” police said.

As officers arrived on scene, they found an adult male with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the Cedar City Hospital by ambulance and later transported to St. George Regional Hospital.

The suspect, Jaxton Saroff, 19, fled in a silver vehicle.

“Officers started looking in the area and received information that Mr. Saroff was staying at a different local motel.

“Officers negotiated with Mr. Saroff on the phone and Mr. Saroff exited the motel room and surrendered peacefully.

“Officers obtained a search warrant for the motel room and located the firearm used, suspected marijuana wax, suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.”

Saroff was arrested and booked into the Iron County Jail for attempted homicide, a second-degree felony, aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, unlawful possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony, possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown.

“This is still an active and ongoing investigation; we will release more information as it becomes available,” the news release said.
