2.7 magnitude earthquake rattles Iron County

IRON COUNTY, Utah, April 21, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 2.7 magnitude earthquake shook rural Iron county Sunday morning.

The quake was based almost two miles northeast of Summit, an area occupied by about 234 people in 2022, according to census information. Summit is about 10 miles southwest of Parowan and 21 miles northeast of Cedar City.

The minor quake hit at about 10:17 a.m. It was measured at a depth of 3.6 miles.

Within the first hour, five people had reported feeling the quake, with most of them reporting from the Parowan area, according to earthquake.usgs.gov.

According to information from the University of Utah Seismic Center, Utah has about 1,500 earthquakes (including aftershocks) each year.

Approximately 2% of the earthquakes are felt. An average of about 13 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger occur in the region every year.
