TOOELE COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 31, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Two people are dead, and a third is in critical condition, after a wrong-way collision Monday night on Interstate 80 in Tooele County.

The Utah Highway Patrol was notified at 10:23 p.m. of a passenger vehicle eastbound vehicle driving in the westbound lanes of I-80 West near mile marker 41.

Troopers were responding to the call when, approximately 10 minutes later, there were reports of a head-on crash involving the passenger vehicle and a pickup truck near mile marker 55.

“One (vehicle) appears to have been going the wrong way,” Utah Highway Patrol said. “Unfortunately, two people have been killed in this crash.”

Both drivers died, and a passenger in the pickup truck critically injured. A later update said the patient was in serious condition.

An Airmed helicopter was dispatched to the accident site and ferried a lone survivor to a trauma center in Salt Lake City.

The victims names have yet to be released.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information is made available.

  1. Will there be an update to the wrong way driver story that happened on August 30th. The driver of the pickup truck was Rodney Knotek, the passenger is alive and awake but has no memory, who was the wrong way driver ? Where exactly was this accident. Many friends have been out to mile post 55 but can’t see where it actually happened and how long was that person going the wrong way ? His many friends and family members are confused on the details of this horrific and life changing accident that has taken a good friend from us.
