GRANTSVILLE, Utah, Feb. 11, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A fire at a duplex on Hunter Way displaced two families Sunday.
Officer Cody Painter, public information officer for the Grantsville City Police Department, said the emergency call came in at 3:30 p.m., reporting a fire at 618 and 620 E. Hunter Way.
Painter was driving in the area, about a minute away, he said, and was able to make sure the residents and their pets were safely evacuated.
When fire crews arrived, they found that the fire was confined to the unit at 620, and was in the insulation between the main floor and the basement. They were able to extinguish it quickly, Painter said.
Damage to the structure was minimal, but Painter said there was smoke damage at 618 as well as 620 because the smoke had traveled through the ventilation systems of both units.
There was no threat to any other homes.
A total of six people were displaced, and the Red Cross was helping them find accommodations.
The exact cause of the fire was still under investigation later Sunday, but Painter said officials believe the source of the fire was a lit cigarette that was left on the back porch of the unit and then was blown into the insulation by Sunday’s brisk wind.
Both units are occupied by their owners.
