WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An early Saturday morning crash on Interstate 15 in Washington County resulted in the deaths of two men, according to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol.

At about 3:50 a.m., a gray Pontiac Grand Prix with three adult male occupants was northbound on I-15 when it came up behind a slow-moving semitrailer in the right lane near Mile Marker 34.4. The driver of the Grand Prix swerved to the left to avoid the semi, but the passenger side of the car hit the left side of the trailer and its steel rear bumper, which tore through the Grand Prix. The car’s male front passenger and right rear passenger were killed on impact.

The deceased were identified as Nigel J Chavez, 25, and Matthew Chavez, 26, both of Cedar City.

According to the release, the semi and the Grand Prix traveled north about another mile before stopping on the right shoulder near Mile Marker 35.5. Both drivers then called police.

Alcohol is being investigated as a factor in this crash.
