ESCALANTE, Utah, April 23, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Bomb disposal teams were called after two mortars were found on the ground in a remote area near Escalante, police said Monday.
A news release from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said Sheriff James Perkins received an email from a concerned citizen saying that while they were on Road 153 near Escalante on April 19, they had spotted two objects that they first thought were bowling pins.
When they took a closer look they realized there were two mortars lying on the ground, the news release said.
Upon receiving the email, Perkins contacted the Hill Air Force Base Demolition Experts and they contacted the Bomb Disposal Team to go and dispose of the mortars.
The Bomb Team along with Deputy Eric Dunton of the GCSO went out to the site.
“It could not be confirmed or denied that they were live mortars, but the team destroyed the two mortars at the scene,” the news release said.
The news release added that anyone who notices suspicious items like these is advised not to pick them up. Just take pictures, get coordinates and contact 911 or call the sheriff’s office, the news release said.
