WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Sept. 2, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Three people will be facing some serious charges after fleeing a traffic stop and then crashing into another vehicle Friday night.
West Valley City Police Lt. Mike Fossmo said an officer tried to make a traffic stop on a car as it left the east side of the city.
“The vehicle fled. Officers didn’t pursue; however, as the vehicle continued to travel through the city, multiple officers saw it proceeding through various intersections,” Fossmo said. “Eventually, we received a separate call of a traffic accident at the intersection of 3100 South and 5600 West.”
The car had crashed into a white truck that was unoccupied. The impact rolled the white truck onto its side, and Fossmo said all indications are that the car was traveling at high speed. He said he doesn’t know if the car went airborne, but “judging by the damage, it looks like that’s a possibility.”
He said officers would be interviewing witnesses and customers at the nearby IHOP restaurant to get a clear idea of what happened.
When police arrived at the scene, the occupants of the car — one adult and two juveniles — attempted to flee on foot, but were rounded up and taken into custody. Fossmo said their injuries appear to be minor.
They will be facing charges of fleeing a traffic stop, suspicion of DUI, fleeing on foot, and resisting arrest. Fossmo said there may be additional charges, as well.
He said he didn’t think the car was stolen, but “probably belongs to family or a friend of one of the occupants.”
