CACHE COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 5, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Two Cache County locals and a visiting friend, all on snowmobiles, triggered an avalanche Friday in Providence Canyon.

A report made to the Utah Avalanche Center says that two Cache County men, Jack and Matt, were out with a friend, Nate, who was visiting from Montana.

“Not knowing where he was, the visiting rider, 40-year-old Nate rode his sled up a steep gully-shaped slope and got stuck just above a steep convexity,” the report says.

“Forty-two year old Matt followed him up the slope, turned and started to help excavate the stuck sled. Forty-two year old Jack, who was playing in the trees to the west, saw his two partners working to free the sled high on the slope. He rode up to join them, passed over the convexity and turned back down slope to join the digging.

“At this point he could see the large avalanche running down the gully he had just comeĀ up. The crown broke only around 20 feet below the stuck sled and the party of three. They were pretty sure no one was below when the avalanche occurred.”

It appears no one was injured in the avalanche, which was estimated at 300 feet wide, 500 feet long and 6 feet deep, the report says.
