TOOELE COUNTY, Utah, May 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving five vehicles on State Route 36 early Sunday night.

According to a UHP news release, the incident happened at about 7 p.m. when a passenger car was southbound near milepost 64.

There are two southbound lanes and two northbound lanes divided by a multipurpose lane in that area.

The southbound car started moving into the multipurpose lane and then veered into the northbound lanes, hitting a northbound car.

“The northbound car then struck a third car, which was pushed into a fourth, which then impacted a fifth vehicle. All these additional vehicles were northbound,”  the release states.

The driver in the southbound first vehicle was in critical condition and was flown to the hospital by medical helicopter.

The drivers in the second and third vehicles were transported by ground ambulance in poor condition.

No other injuries were reported.

It isn’t yet known why the southbound car went into the northbound lanes. Troopers are trying to determine if the driver was fatigued or if some other factor contributed to the crash.

All northbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted through Lakepoint for about two hours as the medical helicopter landed and the crash was investigated and roadway cleared.
