35-year-old man dies while doing laps in West Valley City public pool

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 20, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 35-year-old man died while doing laps in a West Valley City public pool Saturday afternoon.

Fire Department officials said the incident occurred at the West Valley Family Fitness Center at 5415 W. 3100 South at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The man was doing laps when he went underwater for an unknown reason, and did not resurface, officials said.

Lifeguards pulled the man out and began CPR and used a defibrillator. Fire officials arrived and continued CPR for about 25 minutes. The man was then transported to an area hospital, where he passed away.

The official cause of death has not been released by officials.

The man was a member of the Utah National Guard, officials said. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

The Fitness Center posted on its Facebook page: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the pools will be closed the remainder of the weekend. They will re-open at 5 a.m. on Monday morning.”
