4 Kearns area schools placed on shelter in place as officials search for suspects

KEARNS, Utah, Sept. 30, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Four Kearns area schools were placed on a shelter in place protocol Monday afternoon as Unified Police Department searched for two suspects in the area.

A tweet from Granite School District at 1:45 p.m. said South Kearns Elementary School at 4430 W. 5570 South, David Gourley Elementary School at 4905 S. 4300 West, West Kearns Elementary School at 4900 S. 4620 West and Kearns Junior High at 4040 W. Sams Blvd. were placed on the shelter in place protocol. The tweet said there was no direct threat to students; the protocol was strictly precautionary to ensure student safety. Kearns High School was also included in the protocol, though that was lifted as of 2:45 p.m.

A tweet from West Jordan Police Department said: “We had a vehicle flee from us following a motorist assist. Pursuit was terminated shortly after starting. UPD located vehicle in their area and driver bailed out. Area is being searched for suspects.”

A follow-up tweet said the two suspects were barricaded in a garage. “Both suspects in custody,” said a tweet at 4:30 p.m. “Second suspect was bitten by a K-9 and has minor injuries.” The car was determined to be stolen.
