SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 29, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle accident that also involved two residences.

Officers were called to the scene, in the area of  400 S. Cheyenne St., just prior to dawn. They found that an SUV, a Ford Excursion, had struck three vehicles after drifting into the eastbound lane.

“In talking with the driver, it sounds like this is a case where he  was just extremely fatigued and fell asleep at the wheel,” Lt. Scott Smalley, SLCPD, said at the scene.

“He drifted into the eastbound lanes, ended up clipping one car in the roadway, then jumping the curb, where he then hit a second and third car, and also hit the corner of the building over there, where the vehicle stopped.

“An Excursion’s not a small vehicle, and we don’t know at what point he woke up and tried to brake at that point or not, but obviously he still went a ways after he jumped the curb,” Smalley said.

The driver was uninjured, and most of the damage to the residences was superficial,” Smalley said. A support beam was struck, and damage to all the vehicles is substantial.

“I guess the good and bad is that apparently he had a long day and was fatigued, and that’s why he fell asleep at the wheel, but fortunately for us, this time of night, there weren’t a lot of people out,” Smalley said.

Any charges filed would likely be related to traffic issues, he added.
