SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 16, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 5-year-old child was killed and his mother injured after being struck by a suspected DUI driver Saturday morning near 900 West and California Avenue.

According to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brett Olsen, the child and mother were in the crosswalk when they were run over by a GMC Jimmy.

First responders worked to save the 5-year-old but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother was taken to a nearby hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Olsen said the driver of the SUV remained the accident site and was suspected of DUI .

The circumstances that led to the accident are not yet known, Olsen said, but it appeared the child was riding or pushing a small bicycle with training wheels at the time of the incident.

Streets in the area — close to the Sorenson Multicultural Center — were expected remained closed into the early afternoon. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Gephardt Daily will have more information on this developing story as details become available.
