TOOELE COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Six people suffered serious to critical injuries Wednesday morning at the site of Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

It was not immediately clear whether the victims were part of the competition, or there as spectators or support crew.

According to JoAnn Carlson, spokeswoman for the event, the accident happened at about 8:45 a.m. on an access road on the pit area. Carlson said the accident was not on a race course.

According to reports, two cars collided head on. Carlson said six people were injured, two of them seriously. They were transported by helicopter and ambulance to the University of Utah Hospital, she said.

This accident follows one yesterday in which racer Jerry K. Wortman was injured when he lost control of his vehicle while traveling at more than 180 mph.

Wortman, 84 and from Big Sky, Montana, also was transported to the University of Utah Hospital. Carlson said she had no update on Wortman’s condition.
