WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Aug. 23, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Seven juveniles are being questioned after witnesses called police saying they thought they heard shots being fired in the area of 3400 South and 3500 West on Thursday afternoon.

Hillsdale Elementary, at 3275 W. 3100 South, and West Lake Junior High School, at 3400 S. 3450 West, were both put on shelter-in-place protocol briefly, according to a tweet from the Granite School District. When the shelter in place was lifted, students were released, as the school day had ended.

West Valley City Police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku told Gephardt Daily witnesses told officials two groups of teens were arguing and someone fired a shot. The teens scattered and police did not find evidence of anyone being hit; however, a shell casing was found, Vainuku said.

She said officials then worked to develop descriptions of the suspects, but information given was “widely varying.” Police were able to get a suspect vehicle description and using that information, located the vehicle and seven juveniles, some of whom match witness descriptions. Those juveniles are being questioned about the incident.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
