SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 6, 2024 — There are new insights in Salt Lake City Police Department’s response to an unfounded report of an active shooter Thursday at East High School.

According to an update provided by the SLCPD PR Unit, the preliminary investigation indicates “a parent received second-hand information from their child that another student had pointed a gun at them off-campus.

“The parent then called 9-1-1 and reported an active shooter at the high school,” the SLCPD press release said.

“This investigation started at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2024, when SLC911 received a single call from a person, off-campus, reporting an active shooter at East High School, located at 840 South 1300 East.”

Officers throughout the city, including the SLCPD SWAT team responded.

A Salt Lake City PD’s School Resource Officer (SRO) was already on scene when the call was issued.

Police entered the building and determined there were no signs of an active shooting underway, nor was any gun found.

“SROs have identified everyone involved in the reported firearm pointing incident and have not found any evidence of a firearm being pointed,” the police press release said.

The school had been placed on lockdown for approximately 15 minutes before the all clear was sounded.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
