SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – September 29, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A new YouTube video of the $1.8 billion redevelopment of Salt Lake International Airport features a futuristic terminal with a soaring interior space called “The Canyon.”

Preliminary work on the project actually began in the summer of 2014 but will intensify over the next year as some 24,000 jobs come online and generate a billion dollars in wages.

The consolidated three level passenger terminal is the centerpiece of the redevelopment effort and is scheduled for completion in 2020. It will house one 4,000 foot long main concourse with access to security screening, a large area for meeting and greeting travelers, shopping and dining along with 38 new gates featuring jet-way bridges.

The layout is similar to the one at The Denver International Airport. And Maureen Riley, the executive director of the Salt Lake City Department of Airports believes the new terminal will be much more passenger friendly. “We’ll also have the opportunity to incorporate a lot more concessions, retail, food and beverage opportunities into this new design,” said Riley.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker is excited about the new airport’s energy efficient design and earthquake-resistant construction. He also wants Salt Lake taxpayers to know that, “This nearly $2 billion project is being paid for without any of our state or local general tax revenues.” It is the airport users, the travelers, airlines, and concession operators that will pay for the project.

“The Canyon” concept was designed by Gordon Huether, a German/American artist who specializes in large public artwork. Large windows near the food court and greeting areas will also offer travelers an expansive view of Utah’s mountains.

The entire project including a new parking garage, support facilities, and Gateway Center for rental car and airline ticket counters is scheduled for completion in 2023.
