BINGHAM CANYON, Utah, April 5, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Workers were evacuated Tuesday morning after sensors detected a small amount of movement in the lower pit operation at Kennecott Utah Copper.

Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett said the southwest corner of Bingham Canyon Mine was shut down to ensure employee safety. Bennett said access to the area was discontinued at about 9 a.m.

He added it is not expected that a slide will occur, and workers are being kept away from the area as a precaution.

The area will be monitored carefully and access will be reopened when it it is deemed safe for workers to return.

A major landslide occurred at the mine in April of 2013, moving about 150 million tons of rock and debris.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story when information becomes available.
