SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 11, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – Matthew McConaughey, Oscar-winning actor, author and prospective politician, will join governors from across the nation for the National Governors Association summer meeting being held Thursday and Friday in Salt Lake City.
The meeting will include “business leaders, federal officials, academia and philanthropy for bipartisan conversations around top issues in states, commonwealths and territories,” according to a press release from Utah Gov. Spencer Cox’s office.
McConaughey is scheduled to attend Friday’s session at the Grand America where he will discuss the “role of culture in polarization.”
McConaughey recently considered his own run for public office, most notably in 2021, when he openly mulled a bid against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. McConaughey ultimately decided against the move in order to concentrate on raising his three children and guiding his philanthropic pursuits.
McConaughey has not ruled out a future run, including a possible shot in 2026 at the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. John Cornyn.
Prior to Friday’s session McConaughey, will join Cox, First Lady Abby Cox, and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis in kicking off United Way Salt Lake’s Stuff the Bus campaign, “stuffing 3,000 backpacks with school supplies and handwritten notes for children in Salt Lake and surrounding areas,” the press release said.
