AMERICAN FORK, Utah, Nov. 21, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in American Fork have made an arrest in connection with a deadly hit and run auto-pedestrian accident Monday night.
Police say Darrel Day, 37, turned himself Wednesday afternoon after learning a tipster had given his name to police.
According to American Fork Police Lt. Josh Christensen, surveillance video taken the night of the deadly accident led investigators to Day’s neighborhood.
Christensen said officers were canvassing the area Wednesday when police received a call identifying Day as the driver who struck and killed a 64-year-old Scott Sleator on a dark stretch of road near 280 E. Main Street Monday about 8 p.m.
Sleator was pronounced dead at the scene.
Christensen said the tipster then called Day, who made the decision to surrender to police.
Day told police “he knew he struck a person but feared going to jail so he fled the scene.”
Day was booked into Utah County Jail on single count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death, a third-degree felony.
The American Fork Police Department shared news of the arrest in a Facebook post:
“Friends — we are happy to report that this afternoon, our detectives located the vehicle and driver involved in our fatal hit and run from Monday. The suspect has since been interviewed and booked into jail. Thank you all so much for your help and your tips!!! We really appreciate you all!!”
