SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Oct. 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — For many people, the six-hour closure of Interstate 15 Wednesday was a lesson in patience.

But one baby decided it couldn’t to wait to get to the hospital to be born, and was ready to enter the world right there on the freeway.

During the closure, caused by a rolled semi carrying ammonium nitrate, South Jordan paramedics and firefighters who were on the highway received a call of an imminent delivery taking place nearby.

“Paramedics responded to the call within a few minutes and paramedic Josh Brown delivered a healthy baby in the back of ambulance 61,” said a Facebook post from South Jordan City Fire Department. “Mother and baby were then transported to the hospital. This quick response and safe delivery was a team effort by our entire crew. Great job C platoon!”

Cleanup and side street traffic jams continued until the early evening Wednesday after the rolled semi forced the closure of northbound and southbound I-15 at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Southbound I-15 lanes reopened by about 3 p.m. and northbound lanes opened just before 5 p.m., when the tanker had been safely removed.

Marissa Villaseñor, spokeswoman for Utah Highway Patrol, said the multi-vehicle crash involved a truck trailer, two vehicles, and the semi hauling ammonium nitrate, which is a combustible and can be explosive. Troopers said the crash was caused after a small trailer attached to a pickup truck came loose.

The second trailer attached to the semi hauling the ammonium nitrate overturned, but did not leak.

No one was injured in the crash.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
