HERRIMAN, Utah, Feb. 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The body of a missing man has been recovered by the Unified Police Department.
The remains of Tanner Oblad, 20, were found at about noon Tuesday in the foothills south of Herriman City, near Friendship trail. He had last been seen at 11 a.m. Feb. 21.
Oblad was autistic, but high-functioning. He had left home without his phone or wallet.
Detective Ken Hansen, Unified Police Department, said detectives looked at business and residential surveillance videos in the area of Oblad’s home, and were able to track his movement to the trailhead.
“Today they used a DPS (Department of Public Safety) helicopter to locate his body up in the foothills,” Hansen said. “Just a short time ago, the DPS helicopter and some of our detectives went up, documented the scene and recovered his body. His body is now en route to the medical examiner’s office.”
Detectives were waiting with Oblad’s family, and delivered the news once officers confirmed the remains were those of the missing man.
“We don’t know why” he walked away, Hansen said. “Its not too far from where he lived. He walked up trail and, for whatever reason, didn’t make it back.”
There was no evidence of a fall, Hansen said, and no weapon was found near the body. Foul play is not suspected. Exposure or some medical condition may have taken Oblad’s life, Hansen said. A final cause of death should be released by the medical examiner’s office in the next few days, he said.
“We were hoping obviously that we’d find him alive,” Hansen said. “It’s tough on everybody, especially the family, when we have this kind of news. We were hoping for something better.”
