BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 7, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — Multiple agencies responded about noon Monday to a call from someone reporting they had found a girl walking along the canal road near 15600 North and 6000 West in Riverside.

The canal road is a maintenance road at about 5700 West and runs parallel to the canal, a news release from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the news release, the 10-year-old girl said she and her 11-year-old brother “were riding an ATV in the area and had rolled it over into the canal.” The girl stated that she was able to climb out of the canal but her brother stayed in the water with the ATV.

The girl didn’t know if her brother was injured.

Several units from multiple agencies, as well as neighbors, went to the area.

“As units arrived, they dispersed to begin a search for the boy,” the news release said. “A very short time later, the boy was located walking along the canal road by a searching neighbor.”

The point of entry into the canal was not found, and the ATV, a 2008 Polaris Sportsman, was not located. The seat was found floating in the canal, the news release said.

Both children were checked by emergency responders on scene, and neither child was injured. Both were wearing helmets.

Agencies that responded are: Box Elder Communications, Box Elder Sheriff, Utah Highway Patrol, Division of Wildlife Resources, Fielding Fire and Ambulance, and Garland Fire. Box Elder Search and Rescue also was called, and a request was made for a medical helicopter; however, they were soon cancelled, the news release said.

The incident is still under investigation.
