BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Sept. 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A 53-year-old woman has died after an unspecified medical emergency caused a ground-level fall at Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon Thursday morning.

Unified Police Department spokesman Lt. Lex Bell said medical crews were able to reach the woman rapidly after the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m.

Bell said the woman had a medical issue that caused her to fall. She was hiking with a group, which was able to immediately alert authorities.

The woman, in grave condition, was taken by helicopter to an area hospital where she subsequently died.

The Utah Office of the Medical Examiner in Salt Lake City will now work to determine exactly what the medical issue was.

Donut Falls Trail is a 3.7 mile heavily trafficked trail located approximately nine miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The woman’s name has not been released pending the notification of family members.
