OGDEN, Utah, May 10, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A boy who was resuscitated by first responders on Tuesday after being pulled from the Ogden River has died.

The child, originally described as being approximately 10 years old, was Korbin Minchey, age 8.

After being reported missing at about 4 p.m., he was located by one of 20 to 30 firefighters and law officers just after 4:30 p.m.

Found wrapped around a low-hanging tree branch and almost entirely submerged, Minchey was given CPR and transported to Ogden’s McKay-Dee Hospital in extremely critical condition. According to police information released Wednesday, Minchey died within a few hours of being found.

Police are still investigating how the boy ended up in the water. He had been at a park area with family members, and was gone an estimated 10 minutes before they realized he was missing. His shoes and socks were found on the bank of the river.

His body traveled from about 1500 East to approximately 500 East before it caught on the branch. The Ogden River is swollen with spring runoff, and the water was deeper and moving faster than it would have been at another time of year, Ogden Fire Department Chief Mike Mathieu told Gephardt Daily.

The water was traveling at 1,580 cubic feet per second, according to the USGS water website, and its average depth was 6.4 feet.

Mathieu asked people to be extra careful when around water, especially when the water is high, and to talk to their children about the danger.

Lantern House, formerly St. Anne’s Center, a homeless shelter in Ogden, posted on its Facebook page that Korbin and his mother, Kristin, had been recent residents there.

The Facebook post reads: “It is with heavy hearts we share this terrible news. Korbin Minchey and his mother, Kristin had been recent residents of the Lantern House. Although he was taken way too early we have fond memories of Korbin. He was absolutely adorable and was the kindest most loving boy. He was very talkative and adventurist and loved his mom very much, always concerned for her well being and happiness. Korbin touched so many lives and will have a lasting effect on everyone he met.

Kristin will need help with the funeral arrangements so we are collecting funds to help provide Korbin a nice service. If you would like to help you can visit our web site at Www.stannescenter.org and click the donate tab and note “for Korbin” in the note field or you may drop off donations in person st 269 W 33rd Street. Dear sweet Korbin may you rest in peace.”
