SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Jan. 11, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews battled blazes at two homes in South Jordan ignited by a power line after a dump truck crashed into several power poles.

Officials responded to the report of a downed power line in the area of 10200 S. Menteith St. (3880 West) at approximately 5:40 p.m., said Lt. Matt Pennington with South Jordan Police Department.

Pennington said the dump truck had unloaded into a dump zone for soil and then started to pull forward, and something on the dump truck snagged the power line, and pulled several poles down which is what caused the outage, and ultimately led to the two-alarm house fire. Officers are not sure if the dump truck bed was up or down when the power line was caught.

Pennington said fire crews responded to the scene because of the reports of the houses on fire; he said one house has substantial damages because the roof caught on fire, and crews were able to contain that blaze, though the house was fully engulfed. A second house also has some minor charring to the roof, but no structural damage.

The residents of the homes were evacuated and were unhurt, though those with substantial damage to their home will be displaced. A handful of residents around the area were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

The driver of the truck was also uninjured.

West Jordan Fire, South Jordan Fire, Bluffdale Fire and Unified Fire Authority responded to the incident.

Rocky Mountain Power also said on its website that approximately 3,105 customers lost power in the area. By 8:15 p.m., power was restored to all but approximately 140 customers.

Rocky Mountain Power then said it may be noon tomorrow before power is restored in the area near 3800 West and 10200 South.

It is not yet known if the dump truck driver will be cited.
