KEARNS, Utah, Dec. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Police are investigating a shooting Saturday evening near David Gourley Park.
Unified Police Detective Jared Richardson said police received a phone call at 5:25 p.m., reporting gunshots in the area of 4300 W. 5015 South.
Witnesses told officers they heard two gunshots and saw two men running from the park in different directions. Richardson said both men “appeared to be in their 20s and were both African-American.”
One man ran north of the park to a home, where he asked for help, saying he had been shot. Police officers and medical personnel responded, and the injured man was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Richardson said the other man is still outstanding and police are searching for him with assistance from K-9 units. They also are checking the scene for any evidence.
Police have not been able to speak with the wounded man, and Richardson said the man’s welfare is the first priority. He is expected to survive and will be interviewed when appropriate. Officers were at the hospital Saturday evening.
Speaking of the shooting, Richardson said, “We don’t know if there is a relationship, if it’s a family thing or if it’s gang-related. We just don’t have that information right now.”
He said investigators will continue processing the scene despite the weather, which may affect any evidence, and the K-9 units will be aiding in the search for any articles that relate to this case.
Police are also asking anyone who heard anything — yelling, the sound of a gunshot, an argument — in the area at about 5:25 p.m. Saturday, to please call Unified Police Department at 801-743-7000.
