MURRAY, UTAH – November 7, 2015 (Gephardt Daily)– “Well, it’s finally happened.”

Those were the words of Murray’s Deputy Fire Marshal Pat Killion, as he watched fellow firefighters cope with a spectacular blaze as it destroyed the landmark Silver Cup Fish Feed Factory Saturday.

According to Killion, the abandoned structure, originally built in the 1930s, had been a concern of firefighters for several years. When they were alerted by passer-byes the building was on fire, it came as no surprise.

Columns of smoke hundreds of feet high first climbed into the air around 9:30 a.m. and could be seen across the Salt Lake Valley.

By the time firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews arriving on the scene made the decision to tackle the blaze from a purely defensive position to minimize risk to firefighters.

They have yet to determine a cause.

As of 11:30 a.m. the building was still burning and traffic closed to drivers on 4800 South.

The TRAX commuter line which runs adjacent to the structure was also closed. It is unclear when it may reopen.

Gephardt Daily has a crew on the scene.

We’ll have more on this breaking story as information becomes available.
