The 15-year-old West Valley City boy accused of murdering his 12-year-old neighbor last week will likely be tried as an adult.

The decision to seek certification for an adult trial was announced late Tuesday afternoon by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

Their press release is a follows:

Salt Lake City, UT — The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has filed an aggravated murder charge in the juvenile court against a 15-year-old male in connection with the death of Kailey Vijil.  The charge was filed with a motion to certify that the 15-year-old be prosecuted as an adult based upon the severity of the charge.  If the motion is granted, prosecution of the 15-year-old will transfer from the juvenile court to the district court where he would be prosecuted as an adult.  The District Attorney’s Office acknowledges the diligent efforts of the West Valley City Police Department in investigating this tragic crime.  Their swift and capable response were instrumental in locating the victim and apprehending a suspect.

  1. Deserves to be tried as an adult. A violent crime for 15. Old enough to know better. What will he do next? Death penalty? It sure is expensive on tax payers keeping killers alive for life!!

  2. Actually it cost more to keep them on Death Row for 20-30 years as they take taxpayers money to appeal over and over. It doesn’t seem that way but it is. My guess is while it maybe a capitol crime, they may not seek the death penalty due to his age. The crime was heinous enough but I’ve seen others where they didn’t either, they have their reasons. He will never see the outside of incarceration though. This boy had every ounce of the ability to become a serial killer or rapist going door to door looking for willing victims. I am just glad he is where he cannot hurt anyone else.
