SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Jan. 4, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with police in South Jordan late Friday night.

A statement by the South Jordan Police Department said the officer-involved shooting took place when officers responded to a “vehicle theft in progress call” near 9400 South and 4600 West about 10:13 p.m.

“Officers on scene made contact with a male inside a vehicle,” the SJPD press release said.

“The subject fired at officers, and officers returned fire.

“The subject fled on foot and was later located in a nearby backyard.

“Officers from multiple agencies flooded the area during the second interaction with the subject.”

South Jordan police told Gephardt Daily at 11 p.m. more shots were fired.

“The subject was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment, where he later died.”

An officer-involved critical incident team was on scene early Saturday morning and its investigation is underway.

“The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation,” the SJPD statement said.

The area will remain closed to the public as the investigation continues into the morning.

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
