SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, April 11, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police officials have identified the man arrested Monday after a 5-hour SWAT standoff as Casey Ray Nielsen.

The 34-year-old Salt Lake City man was taken into custody, and booked on charges of rape and on outstanding warrants.

The incident started after a woman showed up at an elementary school asking for help, and said she had been kidnapped, but escaped from the home.

“The victim first came into Franklin Elementary school at 7:30 a.m., and was a little disorientated,” Salt Lake City Police Det. Greg Wilking said. “The adult victim appears to be physically OK, and we are currently interviewing her back at the station.”

Police were led to a nearby home, in the area of 950 West 400 South, where the suspect had barricaded himself inside.

SWAT teams and negotiators attempted to contact the man for hours without success. After multiple tear gas canisters were used in an attempt to get him to surrender, the man was taken into custody by police.

Franklin Elementary School remained on lockout during the incident.

The suspect arrested, now identified as Nielsen, was the last of seven people who had been inside the home when police arrived. Six of them evacuated the home earlier, and were interviewed by police to determine if they had any involvement in the alleged kidnapping.

As of 10 p.m. Monday, Nielsen was the only person charged in the case.
