WOODS CROSS, Utah, Dec. 16, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An elderly couple is dead after a fire erupted in a single-family home on Sorrento Drive late Thursday night.

South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jeff Bassett said firefighters responded to the call of a house on fire at 2250 S. Sorrento Drive at about 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders found smoke coming from inside the home.

Firefighters found the residents, Melba Mecham, 74, and Gary Mecham, 77, unconscious inside the house, and brought them outside to perform CPR. The two were transported to an area hospital, where they died, likely from smoke inhalation, officials say.

Investigators believe the Mechams’ Christmas tree lights caught fire, and the couple tried to put out the blaze with an extinguisher before they were overcome by smoke.
