Business owner detains burglar in Salt Lake City bike shop until police arrive

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A business owner detained a burglar until police arrived at a Salt Lake City bike shop in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at Pedego Electric Bikes, at 1095 S. State St., just before 3:45 a.m., according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

“Officers responded on a burglary in progress,” the news release said. “The business owner called police stating he was holding the burglar.”

The suspect was identified as Willard Kirchmann, 19, officials said.

“Kirchmann admitted to breaking the window and entering the business with bolt cutters with the intent to steal a bike from the business,” the news release said. “Kirchmann also admitted to breaking into the business two other times and stealing bikes.”

He was booked into jail for three counts of burglary, three counts of theft and possession of burglary tools.
