LOGAN CANYON, Cache County, June 10, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Authorities have identified a 77-year-old man who died in the Franklin Basin area of Cache County on Saturday evening.

The Cache County Sheriff’s officials said in a news release Calvin Kunz was hiking with family and friends, and collecting garbage left behind by other hikers.

He was attempting to cross a river and tried to hand off some garbage to another person, lost his balance and fell backwards, hitting his head, officials said.

An off-duty Roy police officer and his wife, who is an EMT, as well as other hikers, tried unsuccessfully to revive Kunz. A local doctor who arrived on the scene used a satellite phone to contact authorities.

Kunz died at the scene, officials said.

Franklin Basin is a road that goes between Logan Canyon in Utah and Cub River near Preston, Idaho, and includes hiking trails.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased,” the news release said.
