SANDY, Utah, Nov. 28, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters were called to a home on Foxhunt Drive after an unattended candle set a mattress ablaze.
Sandy Fire Capt. Clint Stokes told Gephardt Daily it took fire crews two to three minutes to put out the fire, which was contained to a bedroom, but he estimated damage at $5,000 to $10,000 because of all the smoke that permeated the home.
Only one person was in the home and was safely evacuated.
Stokes said two engines, a tower truck, two ambulances and the battalion chief responded to the scene — about 20 firefighters in all.
Anytime people burn candles, there’s a chance of fire, Stokes said, so candles should never be left unattended.
He cautioned that during the holidays, it’s important to make sure no heat source is near a Christmas tree, wreaths or other decorations. It’s easy, he said, for a space heater, or too many things plugged into one outlet, to spark a blaze.
