KINGMAN, Ariz., July 15, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in Arizona have identified 59-year-old Glenn Jones as the man they say died in the explosion of bombs he had placed in a car and near a home in the small, desert town of Panaca, Nev., just 81 miles west of Cedar City.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s officials said Thursday that Jones was a disgruntled former employee of Grover C. Dills Hospital. According to media reports, he was a practical nurse whose license was revoked in March.
The Panaca home Jones targeted was that of a nurse at the same hospital.
Kingman Deputy Chief Rusty Cooper said at a news conference on Friday that Jones had been living in the Zuni RV park, in Kingman, Arizona, which is about 270 miles from Panaca.
Cooper said more than 100 residents of Jones’ RV park were evacuated of Thursday night, and an explosives ordinance disposal team searched Jones’ 36-foot motor home.
“This is a large amount of explosive material,” Cooper said. “We are prepared to go through the day and into the evening.”
Cooper said he expected the search to continue into the night, and more residents might be evacuated. Displaced residents were moved to Kingman High School.
Also to be searched is a storage unit used by Jones.
Police located Jones’ personal car at an Avis rental car business, and found an improvised explosion inside.
Additional damage was done to nearby homes, residents reported, and shrapnel was found as far as a mile away, on the roof of a high school, according to a report from KTNV 13. One resident reported seeing a three-foot crater where the car had been.
Panaca, founded in 1864 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is about 81 miles west of Cedar City. The desert community’s population at the last census was 963.
